Historic Acoma Pueblo pottery chicken, Marie Z. Chino

Charming older Acoma pottery chicken.  Not a bank, just a chicken.  The shape and details, feathers, beak and cute wattles, match other pieces by Marie Z. Chino.  I can’t see the signature as there is a piece of hide adhered to the underside.  This addition of hide was pretty common on older pottery pieces from Acoma and other Pueblos as stabilization, significance or reasons unknown.  In this case, the hide does make the bird sit better.  As with traditional Pueblo pottery, native clay, hand-coiled, fired in a hand-built outside Pueblo kiln (nifty fire cloud above the bird’s tail.  Artistry, history and cuteness.

4 1/2″ high x 2 5/8″ wide x 3 3/4″ tail to beak.  In very good old condition with light surface wear.
