Dated 1977, NW Coast carved silver bracelet by Russell Smith

Vintage carved silver bracelet by Kwakwaka’wakw (Kwakiutl) artist, Russel Smith.  This bracelet is signed inside with “R Smith” and “77.”  A lovely piece of Native American First Nations jewelry.  I think the image here is a beaver totem.
Russell Smith (“Ye-Ku-tla-las” means ‘to give all’) was born in 1950 in Alert Bay, British Columbia and he passed away in 2011. Over his life, he studied the traditional designs of his culture and worked hard to master various techniques including wood carving, jewelry and painting.  Smith worked with Bill Holm on the restoration of a southern Kwakiutl Longhouse at the Pacific Science Centre in Seattle which opened in 1971.
The bracelet measures just over 1 1/2″ wide x 6 1/8,” with a current 1″ opening.  In excellent old condition.
