Nineteenth century devotional art, altar piece, reliquary

An amazing antique devotional altar piece, a very large mid 19th century large carved wood and gessoed reliquary, gilded overall. This showed up in New Mexico but it feels European in origin. The entire piece is made of wood, with the layers of gesso on the top surfaces adding shape and details. There are three hollows, the top and second niches still have their glass, for unknown relics. The glass is missing from the bottom niche. No relics were present when this piece came to me.

40″ tall x 17 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ deep

This is a beautiful thing with a long, visible history. Lots of wear and some losses and damage. My favorite repair is someone made and replaced the head of the angel cherub on the upper right. Various unprofessional repairs including various glued areas and tape. Detailed photos will be sent on request. The altar piece weighs well over 20 pounds. It is stable sitting on a surface. This will have to be picked up and professionally packed and shipped at buyer’s cost.
